NeedMet Care

Healthcare Assistants(HCAs)

Role Summary in hospitals

To support the practice nursing team in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population.

The healthcare assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

What are the main care assistant duties?

Typical care assistant duties are wide-ranging. The job revolves around helping clients with their immediate needs such as washing, dressing, and maintaining their hygiene, as well as helping them with basic day-to-day or administrative tasks like paying bills. However, the care assistant role also includes getting to know clients personally and providing them with emotional support and company, which contributes positively to their wellbeing.

The duties of a care assistant can also extend to helping clients to take part in leisure activities, such as going on day trips. Care assistant duties, therefore, vary substantially from client to client so that no two days are the same.

What skills do I need to become a care assistant?

In terms of what makes a good care assistant, an ability to relate to people from a variety of backgrounds is near the top of the list. This is because care assistants spend a considerable amount of time working with the same clients, some of whom will have little other contacts with people so it is important that they are able to form a good working relationship. The nature of the care assistant job role also means that patience and a sense of humour are important.
